Windows Phone 8 OTA update goes live, gets detailed and fails
Ane of the big new features for Windows Telephone eight is the ability to finally do over-the-air (OTA) updates to the Os—either for large things or niggling fixes. Previously, we could check for updates but if one were plant, you had to head home to your PC and plug in the telephone to install (including performing a total backup). Now, things are more streamlined.
In an article over at Mobility Minded, details of the update process were posted, giving a look at what users can expect with these updates. The updates are listed every bit transmission or automatic, with the latter beingness downloaded behind the scenes and the onetime involving borer in Settings to encounter if there is an update.
In addition, in that location are a few types of updates, depending on size:
OEM updates
- OEM lawmaking (drivers, customizations, QC code – modem and BSP changes (encrypted))
Microsoft updates
- Extra pocket-size – (<1MB) – i.e. cert changes, security updates
- Small-scale – (<10BM) – i.e. diff and canonical changes – predominant MSFT update
- Medium – (TBD) – i.e. characteristic pack dot updates
- Large – 100+MB – i.e. Major update release (due east.m. 7740 update) westward/o linguistic communication pack – uncommon
- X-Large – 150+MB – i.e. Major update release (e.g. 7740 update) with linguistic communication pack – uncommon
Interestingly, we but had an update notification on our pre-release HTC 8X for AT&T. Luckily we had our trusty HD photographic camera around to certificate the process and sure plenty, it went as stated above. Almost. For one, we did get the total download only the device never prompted to restart into the bootloader. Instead, it attempted to install the <1MB update directly. We as well have heard it failing for some folks and sure enough, ours did also returning error lawmaking 800b010a.
Before we get all panicky, we actually have no idea what the purpose of this update was—is it a exam of the OTA organization? Was it a certificate fix? Whatever information technology was, since it came in under 1MB it was not too of import.
Still, seeing that error code is never a good matter so we'll just have to expect and see what happens. We're thinking maybe this is some last minute testing by HTC and AT&T though we're but taking a guess hither.
Either way, watch the video above and y'all can get an thought of what to await. The question still remains though if Microsoft volition have a bit more direct command over these updates or whether carriers will still try and block them.
Keeping it affordable
Review: Surface Laptop SE is the new standard for K-8 Windows PCs
Starting at just $250, Microsoft's first foray into affordable laptops for the education marketplace is a winner. With a gorgeous blueprint, excellent thermals, and a fantastic typing experience, Microsoft would do right to sell this directly to consumers as well. Let's just hope Intel can make a better CPU.
Exclusivity over saturation
